Beavertail Cactus
Opuntia basilaris
- Full sun to part shade
- Will rot if given too much water without good drainage
- To 2' wide, low growing
Showy plants covered with large, magenta flowers in spring. This cactus adds color and texture to a landscape.
Beavertails have numerous flowers that open at different times, extending their flowering season. They can also have multiple flowers per pad which is especially attractive. As the name suggests, each pad is shaped like a beaver's tail. These pads lack spines but instead have tiny glochids (barbed, hair-like spines).
The Beavertail is tough and forgiving. It is excellent either potted or in the landscape.
